Ex-US envoy says Israel needs new leadership to repair ties with Washington

Dan Shapiro, former U.S. ambassador to Israel and former deputy assistant secretary of defense, warned in an interview with ynet that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has become politically toxic in Washington. Shapiro stated that Democrats are unwilling to work with him and Republicans increasingly associate him with costly wars. He warned that Israel must prepare for the end of $3.8 billion in annual U.S. military assistance following a sweeping Democratic victory in the midterm elections, which grants the party control of Congress and the leverage to impose stricter conditions on arms sales. Shapiro argued that a new Israeli leadership and an end to settlement expansion are essential first steps to prevent further deterioration of relations with Washington.
