Erdogan’s Turkey cracks down on LGBT community in name of preserving family values

Turkish authorities have launched an unprecedented crackdown on the country’s LGBT community, conducting raids across 15 provinces that resulted in the arrest of at least 116 people. According to Amnesty International, the Turkish justice system has initiated investigations into more than 160 individuals, while 180 social media accounts belonging to activists, journalists, and media outlets have been blocked or restricted.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated on X that the ministry has issued a directive to public prosecutors across all 81 provinces to target content and behavior deemed contrary to "public morality" and harmful to youth. The government frames these actions as essential efforts to protect the institution of the family and children from what it describes as exploitation and harmful content.

Esther Major, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Europe, condemned the move as a "full-scale assault on LGBTI rights and those who defend them." Analysts suggest that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s emphasis on "family values" serves as both a long-term demographic strategy and a political tool to define Turkish societal identity by framing the LGBT community as a "Western import" and a threat to traditional norms.

The European Commission expressed concern over the arrests and legal proceedings, reminding Turkey that as an EU candidate and member of the Council of Europe, it is obligated to uphold the human rights and dignity of all individuals regardless of sexual identity. Despite protests in cities such as İzmir and Istanbul, the Turkish government has not responded to requests for comment regarding the crackdown.
