CIA Director John Ratcliffe arrives in Moscow; Kremlin denies scheduled meetings

CIA Director John Ratcliffe arrived in Moscow on Tuesday for meetings, according to reports from US media outlets including CBS News and CNN. While the purpose of the visit remains unclear, including whether it pertains to efforts to end the war in Ukraine, state-run Russian news agency Tass confirmed that a US Boeing C-17 Globemaster III military transport plane landed at Vnukovo airport after a stopover in Latvia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the aircraft and stated that no meetings with US administration officials are scheduled for this week. Anton Gerashchenko, a former Ukrainian deputy minister of internal affairs, suggested that given Ratcliffe’s hawkish reputation, the visit could be interpreted as a warning that the US might harden its stance if Russia continues to refuse to end the war in Ukraine. The visit occurs amid heightened scrutiny of the deepening military ties between Moscow and Tehran, and follows the announcement of new US sanctions against Iran.
