Shea Charles becomes Northern Ireland’s most expensive player

Shea Charles has become the most expensive player in Northern Ireland's history following a £30 million transfer from Southampton to Fulham. BBC Sport examines the rise of the 22-year-old midfielder, tracing his journey from the Manchester City academy to becoming a cornerstone of the Northern Ireland national team. In 2021, Northern Ireland youth coach Gerard Lyttle praised Charles, stating he had never seen a better young player on the ball. At that time, Charles was primarily a centre-back, yet coaches were already impressed by his composure, passing range, and ability to break defensive lines. Having joined Manchester City at age seven, Charles won the Premier League 2 title in the 2021-22 season alongside players like Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. He received his first senior international call-up in June 2022, making his debut against Greece before ever playing for City's first team. Since Michael O'Neill returned as Northern Ireland manager in late 2022, Charles has become a key figure, missing only three matches due to suspension or injury. Notably, he became Northern Ireland's youngest captain since Terry Neill in 1963, taking the armband at 21. After training alongside Rodri and Fernandinho at City, Charles made his first-team debut against Brentford in May 2023. He subsequently joined Southampton on a four-year deal, playing 32 times during their promotion season. A loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday further enhanced his reputation, with then-manager Danny Rohl describing him as a high-potential player. Last season, Charles recorded his best goal-scoring return, netting six times, including crucial goals against Arsenal and Liverpool. O'Neill had long insisted Charles possessed the quality for the Premier League, a sentiment supported by his standout performances against top-tier opposition like Italy. Now joining Fulham under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the 35-cap international is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
