Massive food waste following cyber-attack on European supermarket freezers

According to the BBC, a cyber-attack on refrigeration and freezer systems in supermarket chains across seven European countries has resulted in the loss of massive quantities of food. Belgium and Luxembourg suffered some of the worst damage, with 40 Delhaize supermarkets affected. Incidents were also reported in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia, and Finland. BBC Europe correspondent Nick Beake, visiting a Delhaize branch near Brussels, observed piles of food, including frozen pizzas and ice cream, that had to be scrapped due to system failures. The damage at this single branch is estimated to exceed €100,000 (£83,500).
