Venezuela opposition leader María Machado calls for elections upon return

According to the BBC, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for elections to be held next year during a news conference in Caracas. Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, described the country's move toward democracy as irreversible and thanked the Trump administration for opening the "floodgate to freedom" following the capture of Nicolás Maduro. Meanwhile, Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, confirmed that elections would be held and that her government would oversee the transition, though she did not set a specific date. Machado, who has returned after months in exile, stated that elections would take place in 2027, adding that she has come to carry out a task and complete a mandate. Rodríguez also delivered a speech in a conciliatory tone, speaking of open doors for returning exiles and the importance of dialogue.
