Concerns Over $75 Billion in Hot Money and Pressure on the Turkish Lira

Image from Al Jazeera

The Turkish government is attempting to maintain the value of the lira against economic volatility by managing interest rates and attracting short-term capital. According to an Al Jazeera report, Turkey currently offers a return of 37% to investors, while annual inflation was reported at 31.5% in August. This spread has created significant appeal for 'carry trade.' According to Bloomberg estimates, the value of positions linked to this trade in the lira has reached approximately $75 billion, including $65 billion in forward currency contracts and $10 billion in money market funds. Hilal Kutlu, an academic at Arel University, argues that these funds are seeking short-term gains and could exit rapidly if market expectations shift. A sudden withdrawal of these resources could place severe pressure on Turkey's foreign exchange reserves. Meanwhile, rising energy costs and a decline in optimism from international financial institutions, such as Bank of America and Barclays, regarding the lira have further complicated the situation for Ankara's economic policymakers.
