Tehran responds to Trump’s threat: ‘Economic D-Day’ is a distraction from America’s own crises

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to President Donald Trump's announcement of an 'Economic D-Day' by labeling the move as 'American economic terrorism' that threatens global stability and sovereignty. Araghchi pointed to the United States' own record-high debt and soaring interest costs, warning that doubling down on failed policies would only lead to further defeat for Washington.

President Trump had previously announced on Truth Social that he was launching the 'most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.' He described the initiative as 'Economic Warfare and Isolation' on an unprecedented scale, warning that any nation maintaining financial or government ties with Iran—including through banks, businesses, or airports—would face severe economic consequences.

In his post, Trump claimed that Iran's military capabilities have been decimated and that the country's economy is 'hanging by a thread.' He stated that the goal of these measures is to isolate the Iranian government and ensure that 'Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.'

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had earlier signaled that the administration intends to implement measures never before seen, including a continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to prevent goods from entering or leaving Iranian ports. Tehran has consistently rejected these threats, characterizing them as hostile acts against the Iranian people.
