Nithya Raman Wins Los Angeles Mayoral Race Amid Controversy Over Israel Stance

According to a report by Ynet, 45-year-old Democrat and Democratic Socialists of America member Nithya Raman won the Los Angeles mayoral election by defeating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass with 52.1% of the vote to 47.9%. This marks the first time in 21 years that a sitting Los Angeles mayor has lost a reelection bid. Raman's victory followed public dissatisfaction with Bass's handling of the January 2025 wildfires, the homeless crisis, and housing costs. However, Raman's past statements regarding Israel, including accusing the country of "genocide" and operating an "apartheid state," have divided the Jewish community. While leaders of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles stated her remarks damaged community trust, some liberal Jewish organizations expressed confidence in working with her to combat antisemitism.
