Wearable devices predict blood pressure crises

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, researchers from the University of Maryland announced in a study to be presented at the 2026 American Heart Association scientific sessions that combining wearable blood pressure monitors with artificial intelligence allows for the prediction of hypertensive crises up to 3 days in advance. By analyzing blood pressure patterns and heart rate data, the system enables physicians to intervene early and prevent life-threatening complications. The study, involving 4,190 participants with hypertension, identified that a lack of blood pressure dipping during sleep and a sharp rise upon waking are key risk indicators. Patients whose physicians adjusted treatment within 24 hours based on system alerts experienced a 61% reduction in hypertensive crises and a 45% decrease in emergency room visits.
