Colombia cuts diplomatic ties with Iran

The Colombian government announced on Thursday that it has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, effective September 19. This decision marks a significant shift in foreign policy under President Abelardo de la Espriella, who took office on August 7. Bogota cited concerns regarding hemispheric national security and accused Tehran of maintaining ties with groups that threaten the country's security. Furthermore, Colombia condemned the Iranian regime for its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and its regional attacks. Despite the severance of diplomatic ties, consular relations will be maintained. This policy shift represents a sharp departure from the administration of former President Gustavo Petro, who had previously severed ties with Israel. The new government has pledged to deepen relations with Israel and plans to establish a Colombian embassy in Jerusalem. Danny Danon, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, welcomed the move, describing it as an important step against a regime that represses its citizens and funds terrorist organizations.
