Report: Iranian-linked hackers shut down UK power plant in cyberattack

According to The Telegraph, hackers linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran successfully shut down a small electricity-generating facility in the UK for four days. British officials stated that the breach did not threaten the wider national power grid, but the success of the operation has raised concerns regarding the ability of Tehran-affiliated hackers to penetrate sensitive energy infrastructure. For security reasons, authorities have declined to identify the plant. Staff spent four days working to restore the facility following the breach. The incident occurred around the same time as a wave of cyberattacks against water infrastructure in the United States. Following the breach, the British government briefed energy executives and issued updated cybersecurity guidance, while the incident was reported to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). While cyberattacks against British institutions are frequent, this is believed to be the first time a UK power plant has been brought to a standstill by such an operation.
