Wall Street Journal Report on Intelligence Warnings to Trump Before Iran Conflict

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, in the days leading up to the conflict with Iran in February, US President Donald Trump held a meeting with then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to evaluate military options. At the time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and certain US administration officials described Iran as being at its weakest point in decades, presenting an opportunity to strike its nuclear program and destabilize the regime. However, Gabbard warned that eliminating the Iranian leader could lead to the rise of a more radical leadership and might prompt Tehran to close the Strait of Hormuz, attack US forces and regional allies, and disrupt the global energy market. It is also reported that Vice President J.D. Vance initially supported a diplomatic approach, arguing that the economic pressure from sanctions should be fully exhausted. Nevertheless, Trump ultimately chose the military options presented by the Pentagon. Currently, the White House has defended its actions, stating that Iran's military and nuclear capabilities have been severely degraded and that the administration is now applying decisive economic pressure through a naval blockade and extensive sanctions, while reiterating that it will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.
