Wall Street Journal Report on Warnings Before Trump’s Attack on Iran and Its Consequences

A new report by the Wall Street Journal indicates that U.S. President Donald Trump received serious warnings from then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard before launching military operations against Iran. In an Oval Office meeting, Gabbard warned against the consequences of a full-scale attack. Conversely, Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Trump administration officials described Iran as being at its weakest point in decades, viewing it as an opportunity for regime change and halting the nuclear program.

Despite military warnings regarding ammunition shortages and potential casualties, and J.D. Vance's proposal for a diplomatic approach, Trump ultimately approved plans presented by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and senior military commanders to strike military infrastructure and eliminate Iranian leadership. Following the start of attacks on February 28, reports emerged of Ali Khamenei's death, but Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded him, and the IRGC took control of the situation.

The conflict led to insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, rising energy prices, and diplomatic pressure from Gulf states. According to published estimates, approximately 3,000 Iranians and 18 U.S. soldiers have died in the conflict, with 756 U.S. military personnel wounded. The war also negatively impacted Trump's approval ratings and the Republican standing in the midterm elections.

Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have yet to yield a lasting result. Following the collapse of negotiations in August, the Trump administration shifted to a strategy of extensive sanctions and a naval blockade dubbed 'Operation Economic Isolation.' Analysts suggest that the lack of a clear political objective from the outset has led to the failed management of diplomacy intended to end the crisis.
