US and Iranian representatives hold indirect talks in New York

US President Donald Trump confirmed that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Iranian mediators on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to Mr. Trump, the three-hour meeting was "very productive," with another round of talks scheduled for the near future. Steve Witkoff stressed to Axios that the discussions were conducted indirectly through mediators. Iran’s state broadcaster reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attended the meeting to present Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that the President is open to meeting with Masoud Pezeshkian. However, in his UN General Assembly address, Donald Trump labeled the regime ruling Iran as the "number one sponsor of terror" and reiterated that he would never allow the regime to obtain a nuclear weapon. He added that he is weighing his options regarding Iran and expressed hope that a deal could be reached following the US midterm elections.
