EU and Seven Western Nations Condemn Israel’s E1 Construction Plans

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas criticized Israel's decision on Sunday to advance construction in the E1 corridor between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim. The move follows an Israeli tender for seven residential compounds totaling 1,234 housing units. Kallas stated that the plan would divide the West Bank, isolate East Jerusalem, and fundamentally harm the prospects for a two-state solution. She reiterated the EU's position that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law and urged the Israeli government to withdraw the tender. Previously, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Norway issued a joint statement calling the tender unacceptable and warning companies of potential legal and reputational consequences for participating in the projects. Separately, a US State Department spokesperson told Axios that Washington opposes the annexation of the West Bank, emphasizing that a stable West Bank is essential for Israel's security.
