Economic Crisis in Iran: Soaring Inflation and Financial Hardship for Citizens

According to an Associated Press report, Iranian citizens are grappling with a severe economic crisis. The price of rice has risen by 60 percent compared to the period before the recent tensions, while meat prices have surged by 150 percent. Meanwhile, the rial has hit an unprecedented low, crossing the threshold of two million rials to the dollar on the free market, and unemployment rates continue to climb. Tehran residents report that due to economic pressures, they have been forced to remove fruits and proteins from their diet.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced last week what he termed the "most crushing economic operation" ever taken against a country. He warned that any nation providing a lifeline to Iran would face severe economic consequences. These measures come as the Central Bank of Iran continues to claim the situation is under control, with Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati denying that hyperinflation has occurred.

Despite the economic escalation, security sources estimate that the likelihood of a broader military conflict between Iran and the United States in the near term has decreased. It is believed that the use of economic sanctions is intended to prevent a large-scale military confrontation until after the U.S. midterm elections. In addition to the sanctions against Iran, the United States announced a new series of sanctions against Hezbollah last week, reclassifying the group as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" organization.
