Six months into the war, a hard-line core of generals and clerics has consolidated power in Iran. Mohsen Rezaei, the newly appointed secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, warned that if economic pressure continues, no oil will be exported from the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, the Iranian government stated it is pursuing diplomacy and defense as complementary tools to protect national interests. The appointment of Hossein Taeb, former head of the IRGC intelligence organization, as commander of the Basij, signals a determination to suppress potential domestic unrest amid economic hardship. Taeb, known for his role in past crackdowns, has been tasked with deepening the Basij's presence in social life. Conversely, President Masoud Pezeshkian continues to advocate for ending the war through negotiations, though analysts suggest that hard-liners view continued confrontation as essential to their survival.
