US Intensifies Economic Pressure on Iran as UAE Prepares Trade Restrictions

US President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have announced that Washington will intensify its maximum pressure campaign against Iran in the coming days to counter what they describe as Iranian aggression. Bessent stated on August 20, 2026, that the United States will announce further economic measures against Iran and entities with commercial ties to the country on August 24. The stated goal is to constrain Iran's economy, reduce its ability to fund military forces and proxies, and increase financial isolation.

Simultaneously, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to implement phased trade and financial restrictions. Reports indicate this decision follows recent Iranian missile attacks on Emirati maritime targets. As a major trade partner for Iran, the UAE plans to restrict cargo and trade flows, a move that could significantly impact Iran's access to essential goods and shadow-banking networks.

Iranian officials, including Central Bank Governor Abdol Nasser Hemmati, have acknowledged mounting economic pressures, citing foreign currency shortages and the impact of sanctions. Hemmati noted that Iran is seeking alternative routes for oil exports and is working with BRICS partners to establish financial corridors independent of Western-controlled systems.

In Iraq, the government faces pressure to address militias backed by Iran. Saudi Arabia has reportedly urged Baghdad to take punitive action against groups launching attacks on Saudi territory. Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf visited Baghdad to meet with senior Iraqi officials, reportedly discussing bilateral cooperation and proposals to regulate militia weapons without triggering internal conflict.

On the Arabian Peninsula, the Houthis claimed drone strikes against Najran Regional Airport and an oil facility in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, reports citing Houthi sources and Yemeni government officials suggest that Houthi forces are deploying to Yemen's western coast, raising concerns about potential attempts to seize control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
