Poland pushes for ‘Fort Trump’ US military base as Russian helicopter penetrates airspace

Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced in New York that Warsaw and Washington are advancing negotiations to establish a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, to be named 'Fort Trump.' Nawrocki expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump would personally attend the inauguration. The proposal, which dates back to 2018, aims to bolster the U.S. military presence on NATO's eastern flank and enhance deterrence against Russia.

The diplomatic push coincides with rising tensions along NATO borders. According to the Polish Army Operational Command, a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter entered Polish airspace near the town of Braniewo on September 22 for 42 seconds. The incursion, which reached a depth of 300 meters, triggered a scramble of Polish fighter jets and placed air defense units on high alert. Polish military authorities described the incident as an attempt by Moscow to test NATO's response times.

Currently, approximately 10,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Poland on a rotational basis, but Warsaw is seeking to increase this number to 15,000. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Stanisław Wziątek stated that the new installation would likely host between 3,000 and 5,000 U.S. troops. President Trump has characterized the progress on the base as a 'historic step' for the U.S.-Polish alliance.

These developments follow warnings from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding potential Russian drone and missile strikes against NATO members that Moscow might frame as accidental. While specific deadlines remain unconfirmed due to pending administrative and financial details, Nawrocki emphasized that infrastructure selection is underway and expressed optimism that the base would be completed before Trump's term ends in 2029.
