Pakistan Government and Jamaat-e-Islami Reach Tentative Agreement on Fuel Taxes Amid Energy Crisis

Following a nationwide strike organized by Jamaat-e-Islami in protest against rising fuel prices and widespread inflation, the Pakistani government has agreed to form a joint committee to review potential reductions in petroleum taxes. The agreement was announced after negotiations between Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman. Rana Sanaullah, an advisor to the Prime Minister, confirmed the talks to Al Jazeera, stating that the government faces severe policy constraints due to economic pressures stemming from the Iran-US conflict and requirements set by the International Monetary Fund. However, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has warned that if the government fails to meet protesters' demands, the movement will expand to the capital, Islamabad. Economic analysts note that the surge in fuel prices has not only directly impacted transportation costs but has also caused inflation in Pakistan to return to double digits.
