Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas faces up to 10 years in prison over Erdogan jokes

Turkish prosecutors have charged 32-year-old comedian Deniz Goktas with insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other offenses stemming from a stand-up performance in June. Goktas, known for his political satire, was arrested in early July after a recording of his show on YouTube garnered nearly nine million views. He has remained in pre-trial detention since. According to an indictment dated September 3, the comedian faces charges of insulting the president, inciting public hatred, and praising crime and criminals. While the indictment does not specify a sentence, Turkish media outlets estimate that a conviction on all counts could result in a prison term of 10 years or more. Prosecutors argued that Goktas's remarks about Erdogan exceeded the limits of criticism and damaged the president's reputation. Additionally, the indictment cites jokes regarding religious sectors and a reference to a contract killer on Telegram as evidence of inciting division and facilitating criminal acts. His first court hearing is scheduled for September 28. The case occurs amid ongoing concerns from rights groups regarding the Turkish government's crackdown on artists, journalists, and critics.
