Two Israeli universities rank among world’s top 100 in 2026 Shanghai ranking

According to the 2026 Shanghai ranking, a leading international measure of academic excellence, two Israeli research institutions have secured spots among the world's top 100 universities. The Weizmann Institute of Science maintained its position from the previous year, ranking 71st, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem placed 89th, slipping one spot from its 88th-place ranking in 2025. The Shanghai ranking evaluates over 2,500 higher education institutions annually based on criteria including the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among faculty and alumni, researcher citations, and publications in leading scientific journals. The Technion, which had been included in the top 100 for the previous two years, did not make the list this year. The top of the global table remains dominated by American institutions, with Harvard University in first place, followed by Stanford University and MIT. The University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley, rounded out the top five. Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion congratulated the Hebrew University on the achievement, stating that the ranking reinforces its status as a leading global research institution and reflects its excellence, innovation, and impact on the international academic stage.
