Lucas Digne returns to Paris Saint-Germain as Fulham agree £30m deal for Shea Charles

France left-back Lucas Digne has returned to Paris Saint-Germain after three years at Aston Villa, signing a three-year contract with the club. PSG paid between £6m and £7m to trigger a release clause for the 33-year-old. Digne, who played in all six of France's World Cup matches this summer, had two years remaining on his Villa contract. The English club described him in a statement as the ultimate professional who was greatly respected by players and staff. Digne made 182 appearances, scored four goals and provided 24 assists during his four-and-a-half years at Villa, having joined from Everton for £25m in January 2022. He played a key role in their Europa League triumph last season. Digne previously played for PSG between 2013 and 2016, making 30 Ligue 1 appearances. Upon returning, he said he was very proud to be back at PSG, noting his previous experience there over a decade ago was extraordinary. Meanwhile, Fulham have agreed a deal with Southampton to sign midfielder Shea Charles as they look to strengthen their squad. The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international is set to sign a five-year contract at Craven Cottage following a medical and the completion of legal formalities. The total transfer value is £30m, with Fulham paying an initial £26m and a further £4m dependent on performance. The fee is reported to have ended Leeds' interest in the player. Charles was a standout performer for Southampton last season, playing 2,000 minutes in the Championship and helping them reach the play-offs, although Southampton were later removed from the competition following the revelation of opponent spying. At Fulham, he is expected to take on a central midfield role following Sasa Lukic's move to Ipswich. Charles joins a summer recruitment list that includes young forwards Jonah Kusi-Asare and Gonzalo Garcia, and 21-year-old attacking midfielder Cesar Palacios, as Fulham seek to lower the average age of their squad under new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Marco Silva.
