Amnesty International demands immediate release of Palestinian farmer and land defender Ghassan Najjar

According to Amnesty International, Erika Guevara Rosas, Senior Director for Research, Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns, stated in response to the arrest of Ghassan Najjar during a pre-dawn raid on October 27 in the village of Burin, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, that Israeli authorities must release him immediately. Amnesty International stated that Najjar was arrested solely due to his peaceful activism to protect the olive harvest season and civil initiatives. A military interrogator informed his lawyer that he is likely to be placed under administrative detention, a procedure where individuals are held without charges or trial based on secret evidence. As of October 2026, Israeli authorities were holding 3,101 Palestinians under administrative detention. Ghassan Najjar, 36, coordinator of the Sumoud network, is currently being held in the Huwara military detention facility.
