Amnesty International: EU findings on TikTok’s “rabbit hole” effect must trigger fundamental changes to social media design

Lisa Dittmer, Amnesty International’s Researcher on Children and Young People’s Digital Rights, described the European Commission’s preliminary finding that TikTok’s ‘For You’ feed puts users’ wellbeing at risk as a necessary step toward accountability. According to Amnesty International, research shows that TikTok’s algorithms draw children into cycles of depressive and suicidal content. The organization emphasized that TikTok has failed to adequately assess and mitigate these risks and must now comply with European regulations. Amnesty International called for binding standards for platform design to end addictive and toxic feeds. The organization had previously documented how TikTok exploits user vulnerabilities in its 2023 and 2025 reports.
