What Democrats can and can’t do with their new power after taking Congress

According to the BBC, following their midterm election victory, Democrats will take control of both chambers of Congress in January. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, declared this the start of a great American comeback. However, analysts warn that Democrats face serious challenges, as Donald Trump still holds the power to veto legislation passed by Congress. Senator Chris Coons told the BBC that Democrats should not consider this result a 'mandate' and must focus on addressing the public's economic concerns. Democrats intend to use the oversight power of congressional committees to investigate the Trump administration's actions, including issues related to corruption and immigration policies. While Democrats can easily pass legislation through Congress, enacting it into law requires the signature of Trump, who has threatened to use his veto power. Furthermore, internal divisions within the Democratic Party over issues such as military aid to Israel and foreign policy could make the legislative path more difficult.
