Louisiana health officials warn of rise in flesh-eating bacteria cases

Louisiana health officials have issued a warning following a rise in cases of Vibrio bacteria, sometimes referred to as 'flesh-eating bacteria'. According to a report by Axios, the alert follows an increase in recorded infections within the state. Certain strains of the bacteria can enter the body through open wounds exposed to contaminated water or through the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish and other seafood. Severe Vibrio infections can lead to rapid tissue destruction, sepsis, and the requirement for urgent medical intervention. Individuals with underlying health conditions, particularly liver disease, are at a higher risk. Health authorities have urged the public to avoid exposing open wounds to seawater or coastal waters and to ensure all seafood is thoroughly cooked. They have also advised anyone who experiences redness, swelling, severe pain, fever, or blistering after contact with water or consuming seafood to seek immediate medical attention.
