DOJ moves to drop its lawsuit asking California to set aside alleged noncitizen ballots

According to CBS News, the U.S. Department of Justice moved on Friday to dismiss its lawsuit seeking to stop California from counting roughly 20,000 ballots it alleged were cast by noncitizens. The motion stated that the relief sought is no longer available because the challenged ballots have already been commingled with lawful ones. U.S. District Judge David O. Carter had previously criticized the effort, warning that separating ballots at such a late stage would risk disenfranchising citizens and cause havoc. The Supreme Court had also rejected an emergency appeal from the DOJ regarding the matter. The lawsuit was part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to assert control over state-run elections, though California officials maintained the list of suspected noncitizens was outdated and included legitimate voters.
