Why Liverpool’s 18-year-old star is restricted to friendly matches

The emergence of 18-year-old defender Ifeanyi Nedudoke has been a highlight of Liverpool's first pre-season under Andoni Iraola. However, post-Brexit immigration rules mean he is currently ineligible for competitive matches. Liverpool have recorded two wins against Sunderland and Wrexham and two defeats to Leeds and Monaco in their opening four friendlies. Injuries to Joe Gomez, the absence of £60m signing Jarell Quansah due to a chronic knee issue, and Giovanni Leoni’s recovery from a serious knee injury have provided Nedudoke with increased opportunities. The defender played 80 minutes in one match and completed two full 90-minute games, including starting alongside captain Virgil van Dijk against Monaco at Anfield last Sunday. He impressed fans with his defensive duels and a back-heel flick that caught Monaco striker Myron Boadu off guard. BBC Sport reports that Nedudoke won every duel he contested against Monaco. Following the departure of Ibrahima Konate, it remains unclear who will partner Van Dijk for the Premier League opener against Newcastle, but Nedudoke will not be an option. He has not met the points threshold for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) and therefore lacks the work permit required for competitive matches in 2026. Premier League and Championship clubs can use 'Elite Significant Contribution' (ESC) slots for foreign players who do not meet standard criteria. The number of slots depends on a club's usage of England-qualified players in the previous season. Clubs using such players for at least 35% of their minutes receive four slots; however, Liverpool’s usage last season left them with only one slot, which was allocated to 18-year-old Senegalese player Mour Thalla Ndiaye. Last season, Freddie Woodman, Gomez, Rhys Williams, Curtis Jones, Trey Nyoni, and Rio Ngumoha were the only English players to feature for Liverpool, making a combined 83 Premier League appearances. This situation has been further restricted by the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jarell Quansah, and the loan move of Harvey Elliott. Nedudoke developed at the Austria Wien academy, making one senior appearance after playing for their reserve side. His performance at the Under-17 World Cup with Austria last November convinced Liverpool to pursue him. The clubs reached an agreement in principle for a £2.6m transfer in January, with the contract finalised when Nedudoke turned 18 this summer. Van Dijk described Nedudoke as a 'huge talent' after playing alongside him against Monaco, noting the youngster's eagerness to learn. He added that Nedudoke would likely need a loan move to gain experience before returning to challenge for a first-team spot. A decision on Nedudoke’s next destination is expected within the next two weeks. His agent, Georg Lederer, told Sky Sport Austria that a high-level club would be found for a loan, noting interest from several major international clubs. Lederer confirmed to BBC Sport on Monday that the selection process for a European destination is ongoing. Nedudoke must accumulate 15 points across various metrics during his loan spell to automatically qualify for a visa. The level of the league he joins is a significant factor, and a suitable move could see him reach the required points by January. If successful, he could potentially be recalled to play for Liverpool in the second half of the season, though this possibility may be a deterrent for clubs interested in a loan. Nedudoke remains eligible to play in Liverpool's final friendly against Como on 16 August.
