Rioters smash, loot storefronts amid cost of living protests in Germany

According to CBS News, what started as largely peaceful demonstrations led by a youth initiative called Gen Z regelt across more than 30 German cities turned violent. The rallies were organized for education, health, climate protection, affordable living, and against the return of military conscription. Tensions peaked late Saturday in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg as groups of protesters refused to disperse. According to police, masked protesters in Frankfurt hurled stones, fireworks, and pepper bombs, and looters stole weapons from a gun store which were later retrieved. Hamburg police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds. Earlier, demonstrations in Berlin had been largely peaceful, with students demanding more investment in education, housing, and social services.
