The Transformation of Private Higher Education in Morocco: From Academic Alternative to Family Investment

In recent years, the private higher education sector in Morocco has undergone a significant transformation. According to 2025 data, the number of private higher education institutions has reached 213, primarily operating in engineering, medicine, and management. The number of students in this sector has also grown by 14.8% compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 91,000 in 2025. Many middle-class families are choosing these universities due to limited capacity in public institutions and the perception of higher educational quality as an investment in their children's professional future. Kamal Eddissaoui, president of the Private Education Federation, believes families now view education not just as a right, but as a long-term investment. However, Abdennasser Naji, head of the 'Amaken for Quality Education' foundation, warns that this trend could lead to the commodification of education. Citing reports from the Court of Auditors, he criticizes the lack of effective state oversight and argues that legal incentives for establishing private universities may weaken public education and exacerbate social inequalities. While some private universities report high employment rates for their graduates, the absence of official and transparent data makes an accurate assessment of the sector's performance difficult.
