Reading owner confirms talks to host Bath Rugby matches

Reading owner Rob Couhig has confirmed that the club is in serious talks to host two of Bath Rugby's home Premiership matches during the 2026-27 season. Bath previously announced that their final two home games of the campaign must be moved away from the Recreation Ground due to the commencement of stadium redevelopment work. The fixtures against Harlequins, scheduled for the week ending 15 May, and Saracens, on 5 June, are affected. Should Bath reach the Premiership semi-finals and earn a home tie in June, that match would also need to be relocated. Bath owners intend to accelerate construction to ensure the project is completed for the 2028-29 season. Couhig, who has owned Reading since May 2025, told BBC Radio Berkshire that discussions regarding the use of the Select Car Leasing Stadium have taken place, though he declined to provide further details on the progress of negotiations. He stated that the stadium is well-equipped for such events and suggested it would be a logical choice for Bath. The stadium previously hosted London Irish between 2000 and 2020. Recent upgrades, including a new pitch and improvements to the stands, make the venue more suitable for rugby, according to Couhig. He emphasised that the football team remains the primary tenant and priority, ensuring that any rugby usage would be managed carefully to protect the pitch. Reading's final home league game is scheduled for 1 May against Sheffield Wednesday, though potential League One play-off fixtures could extend their season. Couhig added that any revenue generated from hosting Bath would be reinvested into the football club, potentially providing additional resources for the playing squad under salary cost management protocols.
