As the High Holidays approach, particularly Sukkot, demand increases for homes capable of hosting large families visiting from abroad. Shana Wirtberger, a Jerusalem-based interior designer, notes that American and British families are not seeking to recreate Western lifestyles in Israel, but rather desire a home with local Jerusalem character that functions according to their accustomed standards. According to Wirtberger, these families require larger kitchen layouts, specific electrical infrastructure, and amenities like climate-controlled bathrooms, which are often not standard in Israeli developments. She advises clients to avoid developer upgrade packages, suggesting instead that they take the apartment as a shell to customize it for their specific lifestyle needs. One project highlights this approach: a home designed with a retractable skylight that allows the dining area to be converted into a kosher sukkah during the holiday. Wirtberger emphasizes that her goal is to preserve the authenticity of Jerusalem architecture, such as using local stone and arches, while creating warm, functional spaces for family gatherings.
