Federal judge extends block on Trump order aiming to limit mail voting

U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Postal Service from implementing President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at limiting mail-in voting during the midterm elections. This ruling replaces a previous temporary order and presents a significant obstacle for the administration as states, including North Carolina, have begun distributing mail ballots. Judge Talwani cited the tight timeline in her ruling, noting that states are unable to pivot their systems this late in the election cycle, which she warned would likely lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters. The Trump administration has indicated it will appeal the decision to the U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. To date, no state has announced plans to adopt the new Postal Service system. The legal challenge follows a previous Supreme Court ruling that overturned an earlier hold on the order, citing that the initial lawsuits were filed prematurely before the Postal Service had issued its specific implementation rules.
