Israel’s quiet Syria border may be its next flashpoint

Despite the relative calm along the Golan Heights, Israeli security officials warn that the perception of a quiet frontier could be a dangerous illusion. Reservists manning the border have been instructed to treat the area as a potentially volatile front. While no direct Turkish military presence has been detected near the Israeli border, the IDF continues to conduct raids in Syrian border villages to locate weapons and prevent hostile groups from establishing a foothold. Security officials note that the combination of widespread weaponry and weak central authority in Syria keeps the border highly unstable, with the military anticipating potential explosive attacks against patrols. Relations with the local Druze population are described as more cooperative due to shared interests in countering extremist groups. Beyond military threats, the IDF faces a recurring operational challenge from Israeli civilians illegally crossing into Syria, a group officials have dubbed the "Bashan rioters." The military and police have recently implemented stricter enforcement measures to deter these unauthorized crossings and impose tougher legal penalties on those involved.
