Middle East takes center stage at UN as regional leaders confront Iran war, Gaza and Houthi threat

The annual UN General Assembly in New York opens with the Middle East at a crossroads, as regional leaders face urgent questions regarding the aftermath of the war with the Iranian regime, renewed Houthi attacks, and the uncertain future of Gaza. Leaders from Jordan, Türkiye, Qatar, and Egypt, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are expected to address the assembly. President Donald Trump is also scheduled to meet with Gulf leaders to discuss the conflict with the Iranian regime and the region's future. Rich Goldberg, a senior adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, noted that the war with the Iranian regime has fundamentally altered the strategic landscape, creating potential for new energy partnerships and closer cooperation between Israel and its Arab neighbors. He argued that developing overland energy infrastructure could reduce reliance on vulnerable shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. However, the Houthi offensive along Yemen's Red Sea coast continues to pose a significant threat to global shipping at the Bab el-Mandeb. Diplomatic divisions persist regarding Gaza, with Arab foreign ministers reiterating their rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians and supporting a two-state solution. Meanwhile, France, Britain, and Canada have announced measures against Israeli settlements, adding to the complex diplomatic environment. Washington faces the challenge of balancing its regional security commitments with competing demands concerning the future of Gaza and relations with Israel.
