Gunfire and explosions rock Niger’s capital

Sustained gunfire and explosions were reported across Niamey, the capital of Niger, early Saturday. Security sources told Reuters that attackers targeted Diori Hamani International Airport and attempted to breach the security perimeter of the presidential palace. Bana Ibrahim, a member of Niger's Consultative Council, confirmed that Base 101, a major military installation, was also attacked. He stated on Facebook that security forces have since regained control of the situation. While a second source indicated that some attackers were neutralized and others fled, Reuters noted that these claims could not be independently verified. The military government, which has ruled since the July 2023 coup, has not yet issued an official statement. The unrest follows recent government moves to tighten state control over the nation's uranium sector, including the reallocation of mining permits previously held by foreign firms.
