Construction workers discover $10 million gold stash during renovations in Belgium

Construction workers in the Belgian town of Dendermonde discovered a significant stash of gold while performing renovation and sewage work on a building owned by the charity CAW East-Flanders. Local police reported that the workers contacted authorities immediately upon finding the cache. Images released by the police department show approximately 50 gold bars and piles of gold coins that had been bricked into the cellar walls. The haul is estimated to be worth nine million euros, or $10.4 million. One worker told the Belgian outlet VRT that the crew's initial reaction was one of disbelief and amazement. Police stated that the gold was inventoried and secured in a high-security federal government vault. While authorities have warned curious treasure hunters to stay away from the fenced-off site, it remains unclear who the legal owner of the trove is or who will ultimately claim it.
