Ukraine targets Russia’s Amazon rivals as drone war hits home front

Ukraine marked its 35th Independence Day with a series of drone strikes targeting warehouses belonging to Ozon, one of Russia’s largest e-commerce giants. Kyiv has stated that these strikes are part of a campaign to bring the war to the Russian rear and undermine the country’s economy. In recent weeks, Ukraine has systematically attacked at least 24 logistics centers belonging to Wildberries, often described as the 'Russian Amazon,' alleging that these facilities are also used to transport military equipment to the front lines.

Following the attacks, shares in Ozon and its controlling shareholder, AFK Sistema, fell by 12% and 13% respectively on the Moscow Exchange. Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the damage to the logistics centers, promising government assistance for reconstruction, while warning that Moscow would respond to what he termed the 'opening of Pandora’s box' by targeting sensitive sectors of the Ukrainian economy.

Reports indicate that the drone campaign has resulted in civilian casualties, with Moscow claiming that two children were killed by drone debris in the Krasnodar region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported successful strikes against two Russian MiG-29 fighter jets and two vessels in the Black Sea. Russian forces continued their own operations, with reports of three fatalities following strikes on the outskirts of Kharkiv.

During the Independence Day commemorations, European leaders, including British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, visited Kyiv to demonstrate solidarity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the approval of a €6.1 billion aid package, specifically earmarked for air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition to support Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts.
